After the start of orgasm, pulses of semen begin to flow from the urethra, reach a peak discharge and then diminish in flow. The typical orgasm consists of 10 to 15 contractions, although the man is unlikely to be consciously aware of that many. Once the first contraction has taken place, ejaculation will continue to completion as an involuntary process. At this stage, ejaculation cannot be stopped. The rate of contractions gradually slows during the orgasm. Initial contractions occur at an average interval of 0.6 seconds with an increasing increment of 0.1 seconds per contraction. Contractions of most men proceed at regular rhythmic intervals for the duration of the orgasm. Many men also experience additional irregular contractions at the conclusion of the orgasm.

Ejaculation usually begins during the first or second contraction of orgasm. For most men, the first ejection of semen occurs during the second contraction, while the second is typically the largest expelling 40% or more of total semen discharge. After this peak, the magnitude of semen the penis emits diminishes as the contractions begin to lessen in intensity. The muscle contractions of the orgasm can continue after ejaculation with no additional semen discharge occurring. A small sample study of seven men showed an average of 7 spurts of semen followed by an average of 10 more contractions with no semen expelled. This study also found a high correlation between number of spurts of semen and total ejaculate volume, i.e., larger semen volumes resulted from additional pulses of semen rather than larger individual spurts.

There are men who are able to achieve multiple orgasms, with or without the typical sequence of ejaculation and refractory period. Some of those men report not noticing refractory periods, or are able to maintain erection by “sustaining sexual activity with a full erection until they passed their refractory time for orgasm when they proceeded to have a second or third orgasm”.

However, suppose you almost always ejaculate prematurely (typically within 1 to 3 minutes of penetration) or cannot delay ejaculation most of the time during intercourse. In that case, a health care provider may diagnose you with premature ejaculation.

When in doubt, head straight to the source to pick up over the counter cures for premature ejaculation by shopping specifically with the product manufacturer.

The occurrence of premature ejaculation in men is quite common. The problem tends to get better over an interval of time. However, some natural remedies are quite preferable in this case and may help in improving and managing the concern. Those remedies include the consumption of ayurvedic herbal medicines as well as Chinese herbal medicines, topical application of the cream on the penis, lidocaine spray, supplements of zinc, dietary changes, exercises like pelvic floor exercises, masturbation, and techniques like stop-start technique and pause-squeeze technique.

It is typical for men to be able to have at least some control of if and when they ejaculate during partnered sex and masturbation. If a man does not feel that he has control of when ejaculation occurs, and if there is worry by the man or his sexual partner(s), PE may be present.

Premature ejaculation is diagnosed based on typical symptoms. To understand your problem, your doctor will need to discuss your sexual history with you. Be frank and open. The more your doctor knows, the better he or she can help you.

Having trouble with premature ejaculation can be frustrating, but there are steps you can take to have a fulfilling sex life. One way you can control it is to ask your partner to squeeze your penis at the place where the head meets the shaft whenever you feel like you’re about to ejaculate. After about 30 seconds, pick up where you left off and repeat the pause-squeeze method as often as you need to. You can also try the stop-go technique, which works the same way, except your partner doesn’t need to squeeze your penis. Also, consider using a thicker condom during sex, which will dull the stimulation and make it more difficult to ejaculate.
